Natural Clinic Clinical Guide to Allergies & Food Intolerances

The following information is regarding mild & moderate allergic symptoms and does not apply to anaphylactic symptoms.

WHAT IS CONSTIPATION?

ALLERGIES & INTOLERANCES: WHAT ARE THEY?

Allergies are your body’s reaction to particles that it considers foreign, triggering a cascade of inflammatory reactions designed to attack foreign particles. These reactions are initiated by histamine, leukotrienes and prostaglandins which are associated with the typical allergic symptoms of sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, and more

Allergies and intolerances can be immediate (IgE-mediated) and delayed (IgG mediated).

  • IgA mediated responses can also be involved when specific foods inflame the lining of the gastrointestinal tract due to sensitivity.

  • IgE allergic responses can occur within 3 hours of eating a food, and may range from a rash on the skin to an extreme anaphylactic response.

  • IgG allergic responses are much more delayed and difficult to notice, as the reaction may occur several days after consuming the food. IgG responses.

CAUSES AND TRIGGERS

In our integrated practice we view allergic symptoms as a result of disruption to the microbiome in the gut, as well as to dysfunction of adrenal glands, overall digestive function, and altered immune responses.

Heritability rates for increased susceptibility to allergic symptoms have been found to be as high as 95% for asthma, 91% for allergic rhinitis, and 84% for atopic dermatitis.

Increased levels of pathogenic bacteria strains such as Clostridium difficile are linked to higher rates of allergy. Conversely, increased levels of beneficial bacteria like Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus are associated with lower rates of allergic disease and intolerances.

Poor digestion and damage to the gastrointestinal lining allows food particles to leak into the bloodstream, triggering allergic and inflammatory reactions. This is also related to imbalance in gut bacteria.

Candida colonisation in the gut promotes food allergies, and irritates the walls of the gut to cause increased permeability and inflammation.

Increased exposure to heavy metals, pesticides, hydrocarbons and dioxins overburden the liver and increase systemic inflammation, creating a perfect host environment for allergies to thrive.

Long-term stress and adrenal burnout affects the way the adrenal glands can secrete hormones that help the body cope with allergens. Allergic symptoms will increase when the adrenal glands can’t keep up with the daily production of stress hormones.

A diet characterised by consumption of highly refined, overly processed, energy-rich foods and beverages is linked to an increasing prevalence of asthma and allergies.

How your diet plays a role

Including a wide variety of seasonal produce

Aim to have 2-3 serves of fruits and vegetables a day to increase your nutrient and phytochemical content that will protect against inflammation and oxidative stress. Plant-rich diets will also support diversity of good microbes in the gut.

Increase healthy fats rich in Omega-3 fatty acids

Include cold-pressed olive oil, walnuts, macadamias, fish, grass-fed meat, and ghee to your diet to reduce inflammation and soothe the gut lining. Avoid saturated fats in processed vegetable oils, cured meats, cakes, biscuits, pastries etc.

Add bioflavonoid-rich foods

Bioflavonoids, such as quercetin, are the compounds that give fruits and vegetables their rich colors. Not only do flavonoids mitigate chronic inflammation, but they work to stabilise the cells that release histamine to provide relief of allergic symptoms. Include more dark berries, dark cherries, papaya, pineapple, citrus fruit, green tea and cacao to increase your intake.

Include high-fibre wholegrains

  • Spelt sourdough
  • Brown rice
  • Oats
  • Buckwheat flour
  • Cooked quinoa

Avoid gluten

Healthy gluten free options include buckwheat and pulse pastas, paleo or gluten-free bread, gluten-free oats, and quinoa.

Avoid dairy where possible

Dairy can trigger inflammation and may cause dysregulation in the immune response. Dairy intolerance is common in autoimmune presentations.

Pharmaceutical and conventional treatments for allergies

  • Antihistamines block histamine, a chemical released by your immune system during an allergic reaction.
  • Nasal spray to help relieve sneezing, itchy or runny nose, sinus congestion and postnasal drip.
  • Decongestants: temporary, and symptomatic relief of nasal and sinus congestion.
  • Inhalers: inhaled corticosteroids to reduce reactivity to airborne allergens and/or relieve asthma symptoms.

Natural treatments to manage your allergies & food intolerances

Nature’s most potent anti-histamine compound, quercetin effectively works as an anti-allergic supplement that inhibits histamine production and reduces the inflammatory allergic response.

The administration of Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus species leads to reduced hyperreactivity and inflammation in allergic presentations, as well as making allergy symptoms less aggressive and frequent.

Healing the gut lining through L-glutamine, protective herbs and zinc helps strengthen the intestinal wall so that unwanted particles don’t enter the bloodstream and trigger unecessary allergic reactions. These nutrients will also soothe inflammation so that beneficial gut species can thrive.

Effectively reduces histamine production and stabilises mast cell activity, helping to relieve allergic symptoms. This is an affordable way to help reduce your allergy symptoms on a daily basis.

A natural antihistamine that works as a potent antioxidant, helping to reduce inflammation, swelling and related allergic symptoms. It also stimulates collagen synthesis and healing of the gastrointestinal tract so the gut- immune axis is working optimally.
