Natural Clinic Clinical Guide to Migraines

WHAT IS CONSTIPATION?

Migraines: WHAT IS IT?

Migraines are primary headaches that occur independently to other conditions, in that they are secondary to exertion, hormonal changes, metabolic disorders, sinusitis, eyestrains, trauma, toxicity, spinal disorders, cancer, infections (intracranial & systemic), vascular disorders, and disorders of intracranial pressure. Migraine is two to three times more common in women than in men.

Migraine is a headache that can cause severe and excruciating throbbing pain or a pulsing sensation which usually occurs on one side of the head. Migraines are also commonly accompanied by nausea, vomiting and an extreme sensitivity to light and sound.

Migraines can commonly be mistaken for cluster headaches. It is important to differentiate between the two.

Similarities Differences

KEY DRIVERS

low blood sugar and insulin resistance can trigger inflammatory changes that cause migraines

Headache severity is associated with impaired energy production caused by low mitochondrial function.

Oestrogen can increase the release of histamine in the brain, which promotes inflammatory mediator release and vasodilation.

All emotional and physical stress can activate inflammatory processes in the brain

Foods high in histamine can increase processes that can trigger migraines.

Causes an expanse of vasodilation throughout the brain in migraines

It has been shown that the MTHFR C677T polymorphism has been associated with an increased risk of migraine

MCAS is characterised by a range of nonspecific inflammatory symptoms caused by excessive release of histamine contributing to chronic headache or migraine

Sleep deprivation or sleeping disorders can worsen or be causative of migraine attacks

How your diet plays a role

Follow an anti-inflammatory diet to decrease inflammatory reactions contributing to migraine attacks. It is also important to identify your triggers, so an elimination diet may be useful to find triggers unique to you:

Identify and eliminate dietary triggers

Commonly alcohol, fermented foods, dried fruits, avocados, eggplant, spinach, processed meats, shellfish, aged cheeses, dark chocolate, citrus fruits, food additives, MSG.

Ensure you are adequately hydrated

2-3L of filtered water daily with an additional 1L of water for every hour of exercise.

Eliminate foods rich in histamines

Fish, cheese, cured meats, pickled vegetables, alcohol.

Common Nutritional Deficiencies in migraine sufferers

  • Magnesium
  • Vitamin D (serum vitamin D level between 50ng/mL and 100ng/mL have been associated with 80% lower odds of migraine headache compared to < 20ng/mL.
  • Omega 3

Managing your Migraines

It is essential to aim to prevent migraine occurrence by addressing the key drivers.

Support healthy sleep

Avoid histamine foods (alcohol; fermented foods; dried fruits; avocados; eggplant; spinach; processed meats; shellfish; aged cheeses; dark chocolate; citrus fruits; food additives).

Regular exercise (take care with upper body weights and tightening of the neck muscles as this can contribute to vasodilation contributing to migraine onset)

Manual therapies such as acupuncture or massage

Adequate hydration

Lower daily stressors

Eat an anti-inflammatory diet including high levels of omega 3

Migraine Buddy is a great app which allows you to track your symptoms and triggers (ie hormonal fluctuations; diet; alcohol intake, neck pain, structural trauma, caffeine, dehydration and environmental factors).

Pharmaceutical and conventional treatment for migraines

  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs): to provide effective relief of migraine symptoms and pain
  • Triptans: Oral administration of triptan medications are effective in the treatment of migraine.
  • Inhaled concentrated oxygen: Administration of oxygen therapy is considered to be effective for acute migraine relief

  • Calcium channel blockers (Verapamil): Used to prevent migraines
  • Corticosteroids – Can reduce the recurrence of migraines and limit attacks that result in the emergency department
  • Antiepileptic Drugs - Indicated for the prevention of migraine
  • Greater occipital nerve block – Used for the treatment of migraine
  • Melatonin – Considered an effective treatment for migraine at doses of 3mg/day

Natural treatments that work

To assist in the treatment of magnesium deficiency associated with migraine to support multiple systems connected to migraine attacks

To decrease systemic inflammation driving migraine attacks

To decrease systemic inflammation driving migraine attacks

To assist when deficient as it has been shown that vitamin D deficiency is strongly correlated with migraine prevalence

To act as a primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the CNS reducing pain sensitivity

To support mitochondrial respiration and ATP production, supporting cellular energy and maintenance of neuronal energy reserves associated with migraine severity

To decrease inflammation and activate the conversion of glutamate to GABA
